One of Belleville East's star athletes was killed Monday morning in a one-car accident on his way to school. Chad Woods' family had recently moved to Mascoutah. Chad was alone in his car when he wrecked it off Route 161 at Green Mount Road about 9:00am Monday morning. The crash site is about a mile from the school complex. An investigation is underway to determine what might have happened. The well liked senior was a mere two weeks from graduation and planned to attended college. He lettered in both baseball and football. Several students were devastated by the news and were sent home around the time after the accident as Principal Dave Kniepkamp wade the tragic death announcement over the school's PA system. A counseling plan went into effect immediately, and the prinicipal says counselors and a minister will be available all day on Tuesday. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but school officials tell us some baseball games may be cancelled if they present a conflict.
